High Scalability with less complexity

When selecting a backup solution for an enterprise environment performance and scalability are between the most important requirements.
 
I'd like to recall the two Kyle Blog entries about NetBackup scalability and why the NetBackup three-tiered approach is the winning one.
 
A backup software with its configuration catalog distributed on different hosts may have scalability issues due to the problem of keeping all this pieces of information up-to-date.
 
The other things to consider are:
  • If you lose one of these hosts, a part of the configuration is lost.
  • You need to protect different pieces of catalog on different hosts, this makes the implementation of a DR solution for the backup environment more complex
NetBackup approach is to store all configuration information on a single host, the Master Server, obviously this host will be protected with the highest level of attention and requirements also using Symantec Storage Foundation and High Availiability solutions.
 
The NetBackup Media Servers are simply there to move the data from the clients to the storage devices, if you lose one of these you certainly lose horsepower but you don't lose piece of information that can compromise the functionality of your entire backup environment.
 
This NetBackup approach is proven and mature with 20+ years of experience in the largest infrastructures.
 
Also NetBackup V-Ray technology has performance and scalability as first objectives, the customers can implement an off-host SAN based backup solutions that off-load the backup activity from the ESX servers. VMware Intelligent Policies (VIP) simplifies  the policy management for environments with thousands of VMs populating the backup policies in a dynamic way based on pre-defined criteria, this feature is very appreciated by backup administrators that are managing day-by-day backup operations on virtual environments.
 
That's why NetBackup customers are using the same approach to protect large virtual environments with thousands of VMs toghether with physical servers.
 
Enterprise environments are often heterogeneous, the NetBackup OpenStorage Program allows customers to protect their investments on third part backup appliances with a better usage of their functionalities. Customers can also opt for a more integrated solution based on NetBackup N5220 Appliances where Media Server and backup appliance are deployed together in a single solution.
 
What about the management of the overall infrastructure? With NetBackup you simply need to install and maintain one agent on the servers you want to backup, all the database option are included together with BMR and deduplication options, the type of backup is selected at the policy level.
 
As Kyle correctly pointed out in one of its blogs"Infinite Scalabilty" comes with infinite resources and is more theory than real world experience.
 
The NetBackup platform is developed with performance and high scalability with less complexity in mind and has a proven track of records on all of these aspects.

Fix Job Duration reporting, OpsCenter Analytics

Custom reports using Job Duration for the Y1 axis are reporting data for all schedule types, no matter what is selected in the filter section. For instance, if you want to display the average duration for incremental backups of a particular client or policy and select the correct filters for such, the report returned shows both full and incremental backups.  If you want to identify the maximum duration for the full backups of a client, the results return both fulls & incrementals.  The filter option for both fulls and incrementals is listed, suggesting that you can report on that data, but you cannot.

This was reported to Symantec in ticket #  03396537.  Per the tech assigned to the case, he found a section of notes of the Job Duration field that indicate this is to be expected, so this is not a bug.  The report is "working as designed".  I firmly believe this is a bad design choice on the part of the developers and should be rectified by honoring the users filter selections when reporting Job Duration.

Backup Exec 2012: Shows Tape drive as in use

We are using a quantum i80 with backup exec 2012 we rebooted the library and now tape drive 3 shows as active even though no jobs are running and no tape is in the drive. When we try to remove the drive it states the tape drive is in use. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Vss writers always failed on Windows 2003 R2 Domain Controller, netbackup 7.1.0.4

Hi,

Our master server run on windows 2008R2 and our's medias servers too.

I enabled the logging level to 4, but no interesting logs.

Netbackup client services is running with domain admins account.

Nfs client is installed

PS : I want to be able to do granular recovery for AD.

But for now i've disable it to be sure that VSS is working before.

When I type vssadmin list writers after launch a manual backup :

I tried many things, I installed a fix for the 2003 Server regarding VSS but nothing to do the backup say : start writing and fail after 10 or 15 minutes.

Why he is complaining about right ? The netbackup services is running with Domain Admins right...
 
This getting to drive me crazy... really I didn't know what I can do.
I can provide all the log you need folks, but please... help meeeeeeeee.

Liveupdate may hang and then fail without installing any updates to Backup Exec.

nbrmms unusual high cpu load on media server

Hello All:

I have a single master server and multiple media servers. I noticed that one of my media servers (robotic control host) appear to be experiencing an usual amount of CPU load. When I investigated I see that nbrmms is running at a CPU load of 30% based on Windows Task Manager (WTM). In bpps I see that the same server is displaying a 96.8% Load:

Backup failure

After some full and incremental backups i have got same errors:

33152 - adam mover error

57665 - i/o error

Now, i dont know what to do. Firmware and drivers - last stable versions. I am replaced "catalogs" folder and erased all tapes in the library, "ODBC error" after inventory has missing. First backup was without any errors after which i did some recovery jobs - all ok, but next full backup, after 4-5 hours, at 50%, exited with errors(btw, tape is empty at this moment). After errors, tape had marked - "end label is unreadable" and now tape have got +1 stable write or read error I had tried with 10 tapes (some tapes are with differential backup which i did some days before about, 400GB) and all ended with errors. Problems with write protection are excluded.

I don't understand why the 2nd backup fails.

BE 12.5 Cannont Add SharePoint Farms

Working with Backup Exec 12.5 in a test environment to test backup and restores from our production environment.  I installed SharePoint 2007(SP2) on Windows server 2003 (SP2), SQL 2000 (SP4) and .net 3.5 (SP1) one one server and Windows Server 2003 (SP2) Backup Exec 12.5 (SP4) with SQL and SharePoint agents licensed, in a simplistick setup with pretty much all the defaults.

When I try and add the SharePoint server as a SharePoint resource I get the error: "None of the Web servers for the specified server farm could be accessed."

I can successfully connect backup and restore SQL, but that isn't the method used on our production.

I've tried every article/discussion I could find related to this error, any advice or troulbeshooting steps would be greatly appreciated.

Also attached is the debug when I try to add the sharepoint server farm

1.i have 3 weeks retention on DSSU.after duplication to tape?What will be the retention?will it be 3 weeks?if my image duplicates after 1 week from DSSU.Then?

2.The primary copy on disk will not be deleted till HWM gets triggered, till that time you can restore from disk instantly. Though the image on disk will be expired after 1 week.

 

How can i restore if image has been expired from disk and has not been copied to tape?

3.my backup id has 3 weeks retention.and this id has been duplicated to tape.Now HMW reaches.Now image cleanup will delete this backup id irrespective of retention?

4.from disk image is only expired and are deleted when image cleanup runs during HWM?

I need to restore from my disk staging storage unit.

 

Please dont lock this thread.

The primary copy on disk will not be deleted till HWM gets triggered, till that time you can restore from disk instantly. Though the image on disk will be expired after 1 week.

 

I need to run import for this restore on my DSSU? Though the image on disk will be expired after 1 week.

Backup Exec 2012 EFI System Partition

In our environment, I have 3 IBM server with uEFI BIOS.

One IBM server installed Backup Exec 2012. Then use this backup server to do system backup other 2 servers and local backup server itself.

 

When configuring backup job on local backup exec server, I cannot find "EFI system partition" in backup selection list but other 2 servers can find "EFI system partition" for backup.

 

Why it happen? How can I show "EFI system partition in the backup exec server. Is it necessary to backup EFI system partition for SDR backup?

I have a request from client to run the backup a 6 in evening to 2 in night(spans midnight) on 10 and 11 march 2013.

I have set the calender schedule.NBU 7.1

 

My calender schedule spans midnight.i have checked 10 th march in calender dates tab and excluded 11 th march.

 

My backup will open a new window in this case on 11th?

It is urgent.I have to reply to the customer.

I am trying to install Sym_System_Recovery_2013_11.0.0.46600_Basic_Edition_ML_Product on my Window 8 pro 64 system. When running the installer I get the error " Symantec System recovery Basic Edition does not support Windows 7, XP, and Vista" and the installation terminates. This is quite frustrating in a Win 8 environment.

What can I do to get the installation completed? I just downloaded this and the recovery disk program today with help from tech support. I have the weekend to get this going and instal a ssd so any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I tried executing the below command in oracle client but the o/p displayed nothing.

Is there any way to find out the backup pieces information from Master server ?

System recovery 2013 upgrade hangs at publishing product information

Hi ,

Iam trying to upgrade SSR 2011 to 2013 and it hangs at publishing product information.I cannot proceed with the installation and cannot cancel it.

I have to terminate it using Taskmgr,The server becomes unresponsive and i have to forcefully restart it.I have the issue on all my Windows 2003 X64 servers

Wherein i have no issues upgrading with 2008 servers...

Any help would be appreciated to solve this issue .

I have configure Exchange servers as FT clients. i can see these server in Master Netbackup server under devices - San Clients but the backup is happening using LAN. it's Exchnage 2010 DAG which consists of 2 servers. Netbackup servers are Windows 2008R2, NB version 7.5.0.4.

 

I see following message in the backup task -

Awaiting resource abc_xyz3_robots - FT client has no devices configured.

 

Please help.
